Archangel Tyrael, the Former Aspect of Justice, is a former archangel of the High Heavens, a member of the Angiris Council and the most prominent agent of Heaven that has appeared in the Diablo series. He is notorious for meddling with human affairs, and has on many occasions disobeyed the will of the rest of the Angiris Council for the benefit of humanity.

His domain in the High Heavens was the Courts of Justice, where angels come to air grievances and reclaim equilibrium.[1]

Background

The Sin War

Archangel Tyrael, The Aspect of Justice.

Tyrael has not always been like this. During the Sin War when the High Heaven first discovered the existence of Sanctuary, Tyrael was of the firm belief that humanity was an abomination that had to be destroyed, and he stopped at nothing to thwart the forces of Hell from gaining any form of advantage through humanity. In the Veiled Prophet, Tyrael uses Achilios as an assassin to kill Uldyssian and Serenthia, and lures the humans on numerous occasions into thinking he's on their side when his true aim was always to throw them into as much disarray as possible before the Heavenly Host would arrive to destroy them all.

However, through pure strength of will, Achilios misses his shots and his targets live. Tyrael claims that Achilios' ability to resist his commands could 'change everything'. Despite this, Tyrael continued manipulating the forces of Sanctuary and even tricked Achilios and Serenthia into attacking Uldyssian by showing them a false vision of Malic possessing Uldyssian's body. This plot also fails however, and after Uldyssian defeated Inarius and cast out both demons and angels from his world, the Angiris Council convened and cast a vote to decide the future of Sanctuary. It is at this point that Tyrael finally has a change of heart about the so-called 'abominations' and their world of Sanctuary:

...THIS THING GREW... AND GREW... UNTIL IT BECAME WHAT NONE COULD FATHOM, WHAT NONE COULD HAVE EXPECTED! THIS PLACE CALLED SANCTUARY HAS BROUGHT FORTH SUCH AS WE HAVE NEVER WITNESSED, THINGS I MYSELF CALLED ABOMINATIONS! Before Imperius could interrupt, Tyrael pressed, BUT ABOMINATIONS DO NOT FEEL SUFFERING, THEY DO NOT STRUGGLE FOR ONE ANOTHER AGAINST GREAT ODDS AND THEY DO NOT... THEY DO NOT... OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL... CHOOSE... YES... CHOOSE TO COMMIT SUCH GREAT SACRIFICE FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS...
...I DID CALL THEM ABOMINATIONS... AND I WAS WRONG! MY VOTE IS FOR THEM... FOR I WOULD SEE WHAT THEY MIGHT BECOME... AND MARVEL IN IT.
[2]

Tyrael, after working so long against the beings of Sanctuary, realized the potential in them and sided with two other Angiris members, Auriel and Itherael, thus allowing Sanctuary to continue its existence.

The Dark Exile

Following the end of the Sin War, Tyrael regularly helps mankind where he can. During the Dark Exile it is he who creates the Horadrim order and gives the Horadrim the three Soulstones with which they capture the Prime Evils. At that time there was a non-interference pact between Heaven and Hell whereby no side was to interfere in the events of mankind, but contrary to the wish of the Angiris Council Tyrael still aided the humans in the capture of the Three.

Diablo II

Tyrael destroys the Worldstone.

When Diablo later escapes his imprisonment at the end of Diablo I and begins to make his way to the east, Tyrael tries to stop him from freeing Baal in Tal Rasha's Tomb. While the two battle Baal is freed by Marius, a follower of Diablo, and the two Prime Evils overpower Tyrael and trap him in the chamber. He is later freed by the heroes of Diablo II.[3]

He later makes an appearance in the Pandemonium Fortress, where he instructs Diablo's pursuers to find and kill Izual, after which he also tasks them with slaying Diablo in the Chaos Sanctuary. He also reveals to have sworn an oath watch over the Horadrim, and since Deckard Cain is at the time the last living of their order he states that he will watch over the old man.

He makes his final known appearance at the end of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction where he destroys the Worldstone after Baal has corrupted it.[4]

Diablo III

You cannot judge me. I am Justice itself! We were made for more than this! To protect the innocent! But if our precious laws bind you all to inaction... then I will no longer stand as your brother.

— Tyrael's parting words

Tyrael confronts Imperius.

By 1285, once again, evil threatened Sanctuary, this time from the Lesser EvilsBelial and Azmodan. He promised that Man would not face the coming darkness alone. Imperius however, had since discovered his transgressions, and was unmoved by Tyrael's defiance. The two came to blows before Tyrael declared that if Heaven would not intervene on Man's behalf, he'd do so himself. He became mortal by tearing off his wings, and fell to Sanctuary as the Falling Star, smashing into the Tristram Cathedral. The journey left him weakened, but thanks to a group of Heroes, he was saved, and Belial's followers were defeated. However, his old friend, Deckard Cain, was killed in battle by Maghda. His adopted daughter, Leah, and Tyrael carried out Deckard's funeral before heading east, to Caldeum.

Caldeum was suffering from Belial's machinations, but there was a hope in the darkness. Adria, Leah's estranged mother, joined the Heroes, presenting the Black Soulstone, capable of capturing all the Lords of Hell within it. Thanks to the Heroes, Caldeum revolted against Belial and the Lord of Lies himself was imprisoned within the soulstone. All that was left was Azmodan. And thanks to a vision Leah had, Tyrael and the others learnt that his forces were amassing at the Arreat Crater. The group headed for Bastion's Keep, where the forces of Sanctuary and Hell met in battle. After a titanic struggle, the Heroes came to confront Azmodan himself, capturing his essence in the Black Soulstone. Victory seemed assured, though Adria pointed out the stone would have to be destroyed under specific circumstances.

Adria, however, had been in league with Diablo since he awakened in Tristram, and turned the artifact on Leah. To the group's horror, it was revealed that Diablo (as the Dark Wanderer) had bred her as a vessel. A vessel that would contain the essences of the Seven Great Evils, all so neatly packaged within the Black Soulstone. Diablo now stood as the Prime Evil, and departed for the High Heavens. Tyrael and the others followed him.

Diablo and his forces rampaged through the High Heavens and Tyrael gave into despair. However, his human companions refused to give up, and turned the tide of the invasion, even casting down Diablo himself. In the aftermath, Tyrael decided to rejoin the Angiris Council, but as a mortal. He would now be the aspect of Wisdom, and vowed that forevermore would Heaven and Sanctuary stand together.

Appearance

Tyrael appeared as a man dressed in golden robes and armor. His 'face' was constantly shrouded in black, and his wings were shaped like white glowing tentacles, always gently swaying in the air. Tyrael also carries a sword with him, but lacks other personal objects.

As of Diablo III, he is no longer an angel, but rather a mortal. He is a bald, dark skinned person with robes reminiscent of his former high station. Tyrael is still shown as being muscular, wielding El'druin by his side.

Comments

Rank and Power

Tyrael is a member of the Angiris Council, representing Justice, the ruling body of the angels. As such, he has no direct superior and there is no mention of a god or gods above him. Nevertheless, Tyrael has disagreed with the will of the Council on several occasions, often by helping out the human forces struggling against the forces of Hell, and as such, been disobedient to the consensus of the Council.

El'druin

Tyrael Does No Dmgbenchtree

The Sword of Justice is Tyrael's weapon and capable of cutting anything and anyone, except perhaps the righteous which it cannot harm.[5]

El'druin was the sword used by Tyrael when he destroyed the Worldstone in the aftermath of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction,[6] but unlike Tyrael himself the sword survived and plays a central role in the Sword of Justice comic.

Trivia

  • Tyrael was voiced by Ed Trotta, who also provided the voice for Izual and The Ancients for Diablo II and its expansion. Due to a scheduling conflict, however, he did not return for Diablo III. Instead, Tyrael is voiced by Jonathan Adams.
  • Tyrael is a playable character in Heroes of the Storm.

In his time, he has served as the Archangel of Justice and sat as Wisdom on the Angiris Council. Once an Archangel, he is now a mortal being, with the limitations of mortality — yet with those limits comes the freedom to act on the mortal plane in a way that the Angels of the Angiris Council are forbidden. Perhaps humanity’s greatest advocate, it was he who saw and understood the potential inherent to humankind, and it was his vote that ultimately spared Sanctuary from destruction at the end of the Sin War.

Heroes Of The Storm Tyrael - Page 4 - Guide Comments

He is Tyrael. Angel no longer, but not truly human either. His history has made history, as well as changed it.

Tyrael’s origins

It’s vanity to say we know how Tyrael came to be. We know that as an Angel, he was birthed from the cosmic vibrations of the Crystal Arch that dominates the High Heavens. We know that in the time before the Sin War, he participated in the Eternal Conflict between Heaven and Hell. During this time, he and the other Angels of the Angiris Council took the Prime Evil Diablo captive, only for Imperius, the Archangel of Valor, to strike the fiend down rather than allowing them to imprison him. Unfortunately, by doing this, Imperius effectively freed Diablo, since he would inevitably reform. This may have been the first real discord between the Archangels, and it sowed the seed for future disagreements.

Despite this, Tyrael and the other Archangels still worked together as a cohesive group to continue the war against the Prime and Lesser Evils and attempt to gain control over the Pandaemonium Fortress and the Eye of Anu within. At this time, he was served by Izual, a close friend among the Angels who was his right hand, and who would help him in the development of a plan much later. He was also close friends with Imperius (despite Valor’s legendary temper) and Inarius. It was by Tyrael’s decree that the Pandaemonium Fortress was constructed to contain the Eye of Anu, also known as the Worldstone.

Yet even Tyrael was caught off guard when Inarius disappeared. The Archangel of Justice knew nothing of his friend’s plans, nor the lengths to which he’d go to achieve his aim. Like the rest of the Heavenly Host Tyrael was shocked to one day discover that the Eye of Anu, the object both Angel and Demon had fought over, had vanished. With it the reason for their conflict also was no more — why battle over an empty fortress to possess where the greatest power in the cosmos once was? Both sides sought the Eye in order to use its power to defeat the other forever. Without it, the war ground to a halt, since there was no purpose in continuing it without any ultimate victory available.

In time, however, the Angels would discover the truth of what had happened to it. And Tyrael would be forced to make a fateful decision.

Tyrael’s judgment

Tyrael was the first of the Angiris Council who discovered the truth of Inarius’ disappearance. The Angel had forsaken his kin and the Eternal Conflict, along with other Angels he’d convinced to join him, and made common cause with demons led by Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto. At first, he sought to judge his ‘brother’ and his creation, the world of Sanctuary, with subtlety for fear of allowing the Burning Hells to seize control of this new plane of existence by force. He also sought to use one of Uldyssian ul-Diomed’s friends, Achillos, to kill Uldyssian and other Nephalem that he saw as threats, only to be surprised at the strength of will that Achillos displayed in refusing his commands. Gradually, Tyrael went from believing Sanctuary a threat to the Heavens that must be destroyed to accepting that there might be potential worth exploring in the humans created from Inarius and Lilith’s co-mingling of the angelic and demonic.

In the end, Uldyssian sacrificed himself to defeat Inarius and prevent the destruction of Sanctuary by the runaway power of the Worldstone, and this act would have repercussions — for it was in witnessing Uldyssian’s self-sacrifice that Tyrael changed his view of humanity. When the Angiris Council voted, Imperius voted to destroy Sanctuary and the humans. Malthael, then the Archangel of Wisdom, abstained. Both Auriel, the Archangel of Hope, and Itherael, the Archangel of Fate, voted to spare Sanctuary. Imperius expected that Tyrael would vote with him, and the tie would be sufficient to bring about the destruction of Inarius’ creation, but Tyrael instead voted to spare the humans, to witness what they would grow into. It was the only just reaction to Uldyssian’s sacrifice.

The Angiris Council came to an accord with the Prime Evils, Mephisto serving as their representative. They agreed to stay out of Sanctuary, a pact the Evils almost immediately started breaking. And so Tyrael, who had once viewed mankind as an abomination to be destroyed, began to intercede on its behalf.

Tyrael’s vigil

It was Tyrael who, upon learning of the rebellion in Hell that exiled the Prime Evils to Sanctuary (and suspecting it of being a trick) who founded the Horadrim and taught them the secrets of the Soulstones that they would use to bind the Evils. Sadly, Tyrael’s lieutenant Izual had been captured and tormented by the Prime Evils long before and had vouchsafed to them how to corrupt the Soulstones. Therefore, when the Horadrim captured the three, their prisons would not hold them indefinitely. It was through this knowledge that Tal Rasha, the Horadrim mage, used his own body to imprison Baal when the Soulstone was destroyed attempting to capture the demon.

And so, when Diablo possessed the body of Aidan, son of King Leoric, and went forth as the Dark Wanderer to free Baal and Mephisto, Tyrael manifested in Sanctuary physically and interfered. He went so far as to do battle with Diablo as the Dark Wanderer, although thanks to the aid of Marius the Prime Evil was able to free Baal and Mephisto. Tyrael, aided by mortal heroes, ultimately chose to destroy the Worldstone rather than allow Baal to corrupt it, and through it the entire world of Sanctuary.

Tyrael’s return to Heaven after this act led him to contest with his ‘old friend’ Imperius. Imperius accused Tyrael of violating the ancient law of the High Heavens, but Tyrael replied that he brought justice. What followed was a conflict that had been inevitable from the moment Imperius struck down Diablo countless mortal lifetimes ago.

Thus ended Tyrael’s existence as an Archangel. He fell to Sanctuary as a fallen star, and his presence ultimately led to the discovery of the Nephalem, after his shattered sword El’druin was found and restored. Though the rise of Diablo as Prime Evil wasn’t stopped, that creature’s ultimate victory was foiled due to Tyrael’s actions. As a mortal, he was not affected by Diablo’s attack on the Crystal Arch and therefore could aid the Nephalm in reaching the Prime Evil. For this, Tyrael was asked to rejoin the Angiris Council. He accepted, choosing to fill the seat of Wisdom, left abandoned when Malthael disappeared from Heaven. But the presence of the Black Soulstone in the High Heavens was inherently corrupting, and in time, Tyrael chose to remove it.

This led to conflict with Malthael, who had spent his time away from Heaven brooding on the loss of the Worldstone. Malthael came to view humanity as inherently corrupt due to its demonic heritage, and sought to use the Black Soulstone to destroy all mankind. Tyrael and his Horadrim agents found the Nephalem, and in time Malthael was again defeated.

Tyrael today

Today Tyrael stands with a foot in Heaven and another in Sanctuary. He is the recognized aspect of Wisdom, yet he acted on his own to remove the Black Soulstone from Heaven, trusting his Horadrim to act. A mortal, he is not a human, and does not possess their demonic heritage or the potential power it grants the Nephalem. The former Archangel of Justice has seen the potential in humanity and the Nephalem, but he has also seen the potential danger — for in time, the Nephalem may be tempted to use that power as Uldyssian was, to become akin to a God, and may not resist as Uldyssian did.

What the future holds for the one who chose to fall, we don’t know.
